Another Day in the Peten!

Hola!! Today was another fun day!! Jimmy got up early this morning and went back to the tire place. We woke up a little later and met him there. While Jimmy was waiting for us to arrive, Abel, our bus driver from my last trip, happened to stop by. He is a Christian and a very good friend to Jim and Shelley. Jimmy was telling him about my vision for starting a deaf school in the Petén. Abel was so intrigued and would like to go with us one of these days to meet Jaime and Maria Jose. He has two aunts who are deaf and really likes the idea of starting a school for deaf children! I can’t wait to see him again!

Jimmy really wanted to take us to the dump, to show us how poor the people were that lived there. It was heart wrenching! As we were pulling up, five little children came out of nowhere and ran up to the truck. Immediately jumped in and unloaded the trash bags, for a few Quetzals that Jimmy gave them afterwards. They live in these horrible shacks surrounded by trash, maggots, vultures, and who knows what else. It was so sad to see them living in these horrible conditions, but even more saddening was that no one ever goes to share Jesus with them! I am just amazed at how many missionaries are in Guatemala City, but Guatemala is so much bigger than its capital! Right here in the Petén there are so many people lost, but Jim and Shelley can only do so much! We found out yesterday that there is another Guerrilla village with family members from New Horizon and Santa Rita that has no gospel…and there is a deaf girl that lives in that village. And I don’t remember the exact number, but over 50 Kekchi villages are asking for someone to come and tell them about Jesus and His love for them!

After the God moment at the dump, we went back to pick up Shelley’s truck from the tire place. We then took it back to the ac place, to see if they could fix it today! Third time is always the charm, right??? Afterwards we went to look for shoes for Gerardo. New Horizon’s is getting ready to start school again, and it is against the dress code for you to wear flip flops. Well, as we have mentioned before his family is one of the poorest families in New Horizons, and he can’t afford to get shoes because his dad is a drunk. It is really embarrassing if you show up at school in flip flops or barefoot, because not only are you breaking dress code, people will automatically know that you are the poorest ones in the village. Well, Gerardo told Jimmy yesterday that he saw these black converses that he really really liked, but he would like them in red. We couldn’t find any in that color, but I think that Jimmy is going to get him the black ones instead! Our next stop was at pizza hut for lunch! While Jimmy was ordering our pizza, Shelley, Brittany, and I went over to the plaza and found churros!! Sooooo delicious!

We enjoyed our pizza then got busy working on some more caramel apples for Santa Rita!! I think we are definitely pros now!! Our trip to Santa Rita got off without a hitch! Brittany even got a 15 minute nap in on the way there! The kids were there to meet us, and we got started right away! At first they were shy about getting the ice-cream, but soon after they indulged themselves without any hesitation! We watched the veggie tale movie again, and when it was done instead of playing games they wanted to watch another one. Unfortunately we didn’t bring another movie with us! We had so much fun playing games with the kids! Body Part Bingo was definitely a lot more fun today!!

Something I forgot to mention was that this activity is only for those who have earned a Bible and do their devotion sheets. Well, most of the kids cannot read until they are nine or older, so Jim and Shelley wait till they are 8 or 9 to give them their own Bible. Juarjo, along with a ton of older kids did not get to participate today, but instead it is something that they can look forward to when they get older. Well, Juarjo did not like that very much and decided to spit in my face. I was totally taken back, but then it made me realize how much he really doesn’t understand. Not only do they need someone here to work with deaf children, but there are so many children that have learning disabilities or other problems that need help too!

After we left Santa Rita, we went back to the city to pick up the truck! We still aren’t quite sure that the ac is fixed, but it will have to do cause we are going to Belize tomorrow! There is a big community of Mennonites that live there, that have done so well with their crops and businesses, that they are now multi-millionaires. They are going to teach Jim and Shelley some stuff about planting crops and ect. that they can teach the Kekchi national pastors. Where we will be going is called Spanish Lookout, which apparently is very very beautiful! We should be going just for the day, but there is a chance that we might get stranded for the night! Pray for safety!!

Since we are leaving bright and early tomorrow, I am going to go ahead and call it a night! I am so thankful for the time we have gotten to spend with Jim and Shelley. I am really am learning a lot of what it takes to be a missionary! They have given me a lot of guidance and direction, and I can’t wait to see how God is going to work every single detail out! Thanks for all your prayers, God is really working here!

More to come later…..
